EMC Events A variety of fun activities are planned for this year's Riverview Park Community Association's (RPCA) winter carnival to entertain all ages.

For the past 10 years, the association has hosted the winter carnival in an effort to bring the community together. This year's event is on Sunday, Jan. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Balena Park, 1650 Devon Ave.

"We will have activities on and off the ice," said Pam Clayton, co-chair of the event and member of the parks, recreation and environment committee for RPCA. "We will have a shoot to win that we borrow from the city, it's always popular, and for the little kids a toboggan race where parents tow the kids on the snow around pylons."

Other games will include a beanbag toss and family skate.

"It's a very family oriented event," she noted. "Last year ... proved to be very popular with about 200 people attending."

The community association is hopeful for a similar turnout this year.

The local Scout group will help out at the fire pit, which will be located in the snow and families will be able to sit on hay bales around the pit to warm up after skating.

"We are hoping to toast marshmallows this year, but we will have to see," said Ms. Clayton.

The event runs regardless of the weather, which has proven to not dampen the excitement of many families in past years. When freezing rain fell on the city during a previous winter carnival, 100 people still came out for the fun.

"Families can expect to skate, meet other people in the community, meet the association and find out what we do and what they can do for us and participate in games," Ms. Clayton explained. "Hopefully new people in the area will come out."

It's a free event, however the association will be asking for donations. The association also welcomes any volunteers who would like to help prepare for the event, run a game or help clean up.
