Reader comments on "conflicting proposals"

Posted Feb 5, 2010 By GH McGill

Dear Editor,

I may be the only one confused by the ongoing strategies presented by the green bin proponents and the Plasco proponents.

It is disturbing that the public is being subjected to apparently conflicting proposals, each of which seems to be proceeding in conflict with the other, and each ignoring the existence of the other. Is there intention to operate both plans?

1. One basic point is that both plans seem to be in competition with each other and both are promoted by different groups in the City of Ottawa.

2. The cost of green bins seems to be $13 million annually, while Plasco seems to be $2 million annually.

3. Plasco does not seem to reject any particular type of waste for treatment, but it does have an end result of slag leftover, which has to be addressed before commitments are made.

4. What risk is there that the Ministry of the Environment will deny the project proceeding?

In my view it is clear that Plasco is a cheaper and more practical way to proceed, but I am sure there are a number of "yabuts" to come forth from the green bin promoters.

I suggest that a diagrammatic story of the whole process of each proposal, together with costs, be presented so that the general public can get information for comparing the two plans.
