Sens alumni invite businesses to team up for good cause
Posted Feb 5, 2010 By EMC NewsEMC Sports Brad Marsh and other Sens alumni are seeking corporate captains in the nation's capital to participate in Ottawa's inaugural Hockey for the Homeless tournament to be held Friday, April 23, 2010 at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata.
Hockey for the Homeless is a community support program, new to Ottawa. Founded in Toronto in 1996, it has become an annual tradition there and has since expanded to Montreal (2004), Calgary (2008) and Vancouver (2009). Over the last 14 years, Hockey for the Homeless has raised over $2.5 million to help more than 15,000 homeless people towards a better life.
It's a unique all-day event that allows friends and members of the Ottawa business community to play hockey on one of eight teams alongside ex-Sens and other former NHL players, while raising awareness and contributing to a worthy cause.
Tournament participants are treated like a pro for the day. They get to play three games with friends and NHL veterans, receive a personalized hockey jersey, gifts from event sponsors, as well as a lunch, reception and dinner with silent auction.
"The goal is to raise awareness along with $75,000 to help the homeless in our great city," says Tony Patterson, organizing committee volunteer. "Some of the funds will come from the $300 player registration fee, but to reach our goal we need corporate Ottawa's generous support.
"Several companies, including Great West Life and Air Canada, are already on board, but there are many other sponsorship opportunities available," adds Mr. Patterson. "We're also looking for items for the silent auction and other in-kind contributions and donations."
In keeping with the Hockey for the Homeless mission, all proceeds from the event will go to charitable organizations and for specific homeless-reintegration projects and programs in Ottawa.
