EMC sports - Badminton has been around in Riverside South for a while now, but it's just starting to catch on, with 30 participants already playingt the game this season.

Sponsored by the Riverside South Community Association, the Badminton Club offers residents an opportunity to come out to socialize, burn some calories, have some fun and exchange some friendly competitive banter.

"Badminton provides for us time to go out and have some fun," said Dora Cook, club coordinator.

The club meets every Tuesday from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Bernard-Grandmaître French Catholic School.

"It is a friendly sport and we have played with each other more than once," said Cook.

The club is open to all adults regardless of experience.

"We welcome everybody that wants to play because it is a lovely sport," she said.

"We do have all kinds of players including new comers that have probably not played for a long time and may not necessarily know the rules."

To sign up, residents are required to pay $40 for the season that runs from September to May on a first come basis.

The money from the fees goes back to Riverside Community Association to help fund other community related activities and programs, Cook said.

She added that the game has helped improve the lifestyle of residents and it connects the residents to the community.

"It is a great way to connect us all together," said Cook. "It is a good workout session and an opportunity for us to meet new people."
